BARBARIANS IN THE GATES

I read the news today, I think they missed the point
The headlines said that we were winning
The whole front page remarked about our skill and virtue
But not a word about our sinning
So here's a thing that I've been wondering about
Who do they mean when they say "we"?
'Cause I'm not clear on who the barbarism helps
I'm pretty sure it isn't me

Erase the truth, erase the past
And make the feast replace the fast
Obscure what's good, obscure what's right
All done under cover of night
Obfuscate facts, obfuscate love
In the name of Our Lord above
Ensure no light can hope to last
Erase the truth, erase the past

We don't know who to try to save
Our heroes aren't allowed their names
Responsible for so much pain
But you claim that we torture in the nicest of ways
Every proud voice that still remains
You blanket with a wall of shame
And if our foes still do the same
Well you say that we smother in the nicest of ways
